Internet2 network in the Sultanate

MUSCAT: A study is being carried out to set up Internet2 network in the Sultanate, said Hilal Al Hinai, The Research Council (TRC) general secretary, at the Internet2 Middle East Regional Interest Group Meeting yesterday.

Internet2 is the foremost US advanced networking consortium. Led by the research and education community since 1996, Internet2 promotes the missions of its members by providing both leading-edge network capabilities and unique partnership opportunities that together facilitate the development, deployment and use of revolutionary Internet technologies.

"We have begun the plan of creating Internet2 network in Oman to aid scientific research and education. Internet2 will bring research and academia together," Al Hinai said.

Internet2 operates the Internet2 Network, a next-generation Internet Protocol and optical network that delivers production network services to meet the high-performance demands of research and education, and provides a secure network testing and research environment.

Internet2 promotes collaboration and innovation that has a significant impact on the future of the Internet. "People will be able to attend online international lectures and seminars with this advanced network facility.

This network will also contribute in scientific and research cooperation between educational institutions and students. This will help students in Oman to communicate with doctors from various countries in the world."

"In fact, the network will provide the necessary speed for learners to benefit from scientific resources available at both national and global levels," he added.

Al Hinai stressed that the Sultanate has made significant achievements in various fields since the Blessed Renaissance, especially in the fields of education, higher education and information technology.
