Gulf Air still facing financial problems

By Roland GribbenPublished: 11:12PM BST 23 Aug 2009

The airline, now wholly owned by the Bahraini sovereign wealth fund after Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Oman surrendered their stakes, is also holding the door open for a merger with another airline.
Gulf has suffered from intense competition in the region from the expansion of Emirates, based in Dubai, Etihad Airways, of Abu Dhabi, Qatar Airways and low cost operators, led by Jazeera Airways and Air Arabia, and has parted company with three chief executives in the last seven years.

The latest Samer Majali, former chief executive of Royal Jordanian, told Reuters the company would honour the terms of its contracts with the aircraft makers but might reduce the size of orders. Gulf has 35 Airbus and 24 Boeing aircraft on order.

He disclosed passenger numbers were down 3pc in the first seven months of the year and yields have slumped between 15pc-20pc. He said the airline was open "to anything" that would improve its prospects.

Two weeks ago Jazeera hinted it was in the market for acquisitions.

Sun Oct 19, 2008 7:30am EDT
MUSCAT, October 19 (Reuters) - EADS (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the European maker of the Airbus family of commercial jets, plans to open an air academy in the Gulf Arab state, to train both local and foreign pilots, project officials said on Sunday.

"EADS has proposed the academy and we have accepted," Mohammed Sakr al-Amry, Undersecretary of Civil Aviation, told Reuters.

An EADS project official said the academy would be built in the industrial city of Sohar, which is slated to see a new airport completed in 2012.

"The academy will be fully funded by EADS and is proposed to be built at the new airport in Sohar," said Xavier Azan, managing director of Dubai-based Offset Development Company.

Oman Air starts Bangkok flights

Oman Air is now operating five direct flights a week between Muscat and Bangkok. Ziad Bin Karim Al Haremi, Oman Aviation Services (Oman Air) CEO said that launching services to Bangkok is in response to market demand for direct and reliable services between the Muscat and Asia Pacific. “Oman Air operations to Bangkok will improve business relations between the two nations,” he added.“We have selected Thailand as our base for expansion into the Far East region and want to take advantage of the opportunities it can harness from the boom in passenger traffic through the new Suvarnabhumi Airport,” he said.“We expect to see higher load factor after the initial launch with the initial target being 70 per cent,” he added. He said that with the ongoing expansion witnessed in the airline’s network to reach more destinations to serve Oman, Oman Air would become the logical choice for customers flying for leisure or business to the Sultanate. “We are going to work in every way to try to increase the presence in Asia Pacific, and will look at tapping all the markets.”He said that increasing economic relations between Oman and Thailand, had resulted in a marked increase in business and tourist traffic between the two countries, which requires enhanced connectivity, saying that Oman Air Bangkok flights would not only link the two capital cities but also offer convenient connections to Bangkok and onward to other cities we operate to. Oman Air will fly Boeing 767s to the Far East. With the inauguration of Bangkok, Oman’s national carrier now flies to 25 destinations.
